HIRSHFIELD | EICKHOLT | “Suitcase”

Can’t hear a voice in this poem? John Eickholt deftly uses only a quiet, intimate music to underscore Jane Hirshfield’s meditation on hearing loss.

SUITCASE

One ear is going,

packing its suitcase

early.

It is packing the rain.

It is taking some leaves.

These.

Space

Also that russeting bird

in the cloudying

iris,

blurred as a hand

waving goodbye

is.
